Let’s Talk about Change

We can flourish as makers and artists by leveraging computers and the internet as dynamic tools. Unfortunately, many of us are intimidated by rapidly changing technologies. I myself am an older Gen X-er, who always felt a little daunted by technology until COVID-19 hit and I was furloughed from my job. Suddenly I had all sorts of time on my hands.

During my ten months off, I discovered online learning and strengthened my skill set by taking refresher courses on Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. After a short time, I had “gone down the rabbit hole” exploring areas new to me such as basic coding, digital design, blockchain, 3D printing, and website design. My goal was not to become an expert in any of these areas, it was simply to explore and become more confident in these “uncomfortable” environments. As a result, I am far less intimidated by technology and computers. I am also applying my new skills by building this website and starting an Etsy shop. I would not say I am entirely comfortable with this, but that is the point. Insecurity and frustration are part of the learning process, especially at the beginning. I still have my doubts and fears, but these are usually outweighed by the excitement of learning and seeing proof of my progress – for example – here – my first blog post and website.

I want to help others grow out of their comfort zones and become more able to navigate change by exploring ways in which our creativity can be enhanced and what motivates us to learn. I believe that understanding even just a little bit of learning theory and psychology is super helpful in breaking through our personal barriers. Join me on this adventure to remove self-limiting beliefs and discover our potential.
